School - What is a school: #4 Rehearsing realities
How are choreography and collective study entangled? How do we learn and un-learn from each other? How do we co-imagine and rehearse different realities? Reflecting on the notion of learning and artistic practice as rehearsing, Noor Abed, Will Rawls and Alex Baczyński-Jenkins will discuss their experiences of the relations between choreography, performativity and collective study.

Will Rawls is a Νew York-based choreographer, dancer and writer. His work has been presented by MoMA, MoMA PS1, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, The Chocolate Factory Theater, MCA Chicago, PICA, ICA Boston, The Walker Art Center and Yale Repertory Theater. Fellοwships and residencies include the Guggenheim Foundation, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, United States Artists, the Rauschenberg Foundation, the MacDowell Colony and several other universities and museums. In 2016, Rawls co-curated “Lost and Found,” six weeks of performances at Danspace Project that addressed the intergenerational impact of HIV/AIDS on dancers, women and peοple of color. Rawls lectures widely in academic and community contexts, including a 2020 keynote lecture at the Collegium for African Diaspora Dance, Harvard University’s Carpenter Center and UC Berkeley Arts Research Center. His writing has been published by the Hammer Museum, MoMA, Dancing While Black Journal, Artforum International, and This Is Not a Gun.
Noor Abed (b.1988 Jerusalem) is an interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker. Her practice examines notions of choreography and the imaginary relationship of individuals, creating situations where social possibilities are both rehearsed and performed.
Abed attended the Whitney Independent Study Program in Νew York in 2015-16, and the Home Workspace Program (HWP) at Ashkal Alwan in Beirut in 2016-17. She received her BA from the International Academy of Arts in Palestine and a MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. She was a resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine (2014) and a fellow in documenta (13)’s “Department of Maybe Educatiοn and Public Programs” in Kassel, Germany. A finalist and a third prize-winner in the 2014 Young Artist Award, she was awarded the March Project residency and commission from Sharjah Art Foundation (UAE) in 2016. Abed was awarded a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (France) in 2018 and a fellowship at the Raw Material Company in Dakar (Senegal) in 2019. In 2020, she co-founded, with Lara Khaldi, the “School of Intrusions,” an educational platform in Ramallah, Palestine.
Alex Baczynski-Jenkins is an artist and choreographer that engages with queer affect, embodiment and relationality. Through gesture, collectivity, touch and sensuality, his practice unfolds structures and politics of desire. Previous solo exhibitions include: Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland (2019); Foksal Gallery Foundation, Warsaw (2018); and Chisenhale Gallery, London (2017). Baczynski-Jenkins has also presented work at: the 58th International Art Exhibition–La Biennale di Venezia, Venice (2019); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2019); Migros Museum of Contemporary Art, Zurich (2018); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2017); Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2017); Swiss Institute Contemporary Art, Νew York (2016); Muzeum Sztuki, Łódź (2016); and Basel Liste (2014). He is co-founder of Kem in Warsaw. Kem have recently realised projects at the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (Kem Care, 2017) and at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art (Three Springs, 2018–2019). He was a fellow at the Home Workspace Program, Beirut between 2012–2013. In 2018, he was the recipient of the Arts Foundation Award and the Frieze Artist Award.
